The women behind 1000 Shillings spent last summer serving the people of Uganda. While working with Ugandan women on creating paper-bead jewelry, they realized that they could create an international market place and a platform to share their stories and their work. They are working with 6 women in Uganda, each of whom creates a specific style of necklace that is named after them.
Their company name, 1000 Shillings, is based on the amount of money that the average person in the Namatala slum, in Uganda, lives on per day, approximately 1,000 Ugandan Shillings ($.40).
Buying a necklace from 1000 Shillings will not only add a beautiful accessory to your collection, (or your mother's collection, remember Mother's Day is just around the corner!), it will also help Elizabeth, Martha, Veronica, Annette, Esther, and Aidah and their families.
